It will be a D-Day to remember…

We are nearing the conclusion of our preparations to honour the 80th anniversary of the largest amphibious invasion in the history of warfare. On D-Day, codenamed 'Operation Overlord,' the Allies deployed over 5,000 ships and landing craft to land more than 150,000 troops on five beaches in Normandy. The landings on June 6, 1944, marked the beginning of a prolonged and arduous campaign in north-west Europe, which ultimately led to the defeat of the Nazi regime in Germany.

Normandy is a region in north-west France (see map below). The D-Day beaches are highlighted here too. If you want to know more about D-Day, please visit the Imperial War Museum’s website here.

Along with numerous organisations along the Sutherland and Ross-shire coasts, ESRA is significantly contributing to the commemoration and has collaborated with local communities to ensure that the 80th anniversary of D-Day will be memorable. Below is a poster listing the events happening in Dornoch starting at 6:10 PM. Please feel free to download a PDF of the poster (by clicking here) and share it widely.

A photographer and videographer will be present at the event, and I will likely be recording on my phone as well. Our aim is to create a lasting video that can be shared for years to come, commemorating the sacrifices made for the freedoms we enjoy today.

In accordance with ESRA policy, any young children's faces will be blurred in any published photos or videos.

We look forward to seeing as many members of our communities as possible at the event.
