A Day with Marine Mammals: Our Experience at the BDMLR Marine Mammal Medic Course
On Sunday, 6th August 2023, the ESRA team had the opportunity to undertake the British Divers Marine Life Rescue (BDMLR) Marine Mammal Medic Course (MMMC). It was a fun, inspiring and educational experience that expanded our knowledge, enabling us to contribute to the welfare of marine mammals. Below is an outline of our day and the critical skills we acquired.
A Course Open to All
The MMMC is a fantastic opportunity for anyone over the age of 18 interested in marine mammal welfare. The course offers a chance to engage in a full day of hands-on training. The aim is to equip volunteers with the fundamental knowledge, skills, and expertise necessary to respond to marine mammals in distress. The practical part of the course is preceded by four videos covering an introduction to the course, species identification, seals and cetaceans.
What We Learned: Key Takeaways
1. Understanding Marine Mammals
Species Identification: We learned how to identify different species of marine mammals and understand their unique behaviors and needs.
Habitats & Environmental Factors: Understanding the natural habitats and environmental challenges facing these animals was eye-opening.
2. Emergency Response Techniques
Handling Techniques: Proper ways to handle marine mammals in distress were taught, focusing on the safety of both the animals and the responder.
First Aid Techniques: We were trained in the correct first-aid techniques to apply should we encounter an injured or stranded marine mammal.
3. Joining a Vital Network
BDMLR's Database: On completion of the course, we were added to BDMLR's Marine Mammal Medic database, creating a network that allows us to be alerted to nearby animals in need of assistance.
Not Just for Coastal Residents
Though living by the sea might seem like a prerequisite for a marine mammal medic, this course is valuable for everyone. It offers a fun and engaging way to learn about marine mammal first aid, preparing attendees to provide care should they ever encounter an animal in need.
A Rewarding Experience
The MMMC provided us with much more than just technical skills. It deepened our understanding of the complex world of marine mammals and the challenges they face. It brought us closer to nature and fostered a sense of responsibility towards these majestic creatures.
The day was filled with learning and fun. As the course was attended by more than just members of our team, it was an opportunity to work alongside and learn with many members of the local community (as well as making new friends and contacts). It's an experience we would highly recommend to anyone interested in marine life or conservation. The course is a testament to BDMLR's commitment to marine mammal welfare and a brilliant way to get involved in this noble cause.

Strengthening Our Organisation and Community
Participation in BDMLR's Marine Mammal Medic Course has not only enhanced our individual abilities but has also significantly elevated the skills and strengths of the entire East Sutherland Rescue Association. As an organisation committed to the welfare of our environment, this specialised training adds a new dimension to our capabilities, allowing us to respond to marine mammal emergencies with confidence and competence.
Furthermore, this training strengthens our connection with the community. By extending our skill set to include marine mammal welfare, we're reinforcing our commitment to preserving the local ecosystem. This expertise contributes to the broader community awareness of environmental stewardship, fostering a shared sense of responsibility and care. Our participation in the MMMC also sends a clear message to our community: we are dedicated to continually enhancing our knowledge and services to protect not only human life but the rich and diverse life found in our coastal waters.
Through this collaboration with BDMLR, the East Sutherland Rescue Association has solidified its place as a multifaceted rescue organisation. It's a step that resonates with our ethos and underlines our role as community leaders in conservation and emergency response.
